Surprising Apple Facts You Might Not Know

Apples are one of the most popular fruits, and for good reason. They are not only delicious but also rich in essential vitamins and nutrients. One of the best things about apples is their versatility; you can enjoy them fresh, baked in pies, or even as applesauce.

This fruit is everywhere in the fall, but there are still a few fun things about it that caught me off guard over the years. I started adding these little tidbits to our apple unit to keep things fresh for my older kids, and they actually got into it. These are great to sprinkle into a discussion before a worksheet or while prepping snacks.

  • Apple seeds contain a natural form of cyanide. Each seed has a small amount of amygdalin, which can release cyanide when it’s digested. You’d need to eat quite a few seeds for it to be harmful, but I still used this fact to teach my kids about plant defense mechanisms.
  • Apple trees can take up to 10 years to produce fruit. We tried growing one from seed once, and that’s when I discovered how long it really takes. Most apple orchards use grafting to speed up the process, as it would otherwise be a lengthy waiting game.
  • The science of apple growing is called pomology. It’s a whole branch of botany focused just on fruit trees, especially apples. My daughter looked it up after a science unit, and we both got sucked into videos of apple breeding and orchard maintenance.

They come in many varieties, each with its own unique taste, ranging from sweet to tart. Additionally, apples are a great snack option because they are easy to carry and require no preparation.

If you’re building out your fall homeschool plans, I’ve used some printables that really make planning easier. These have worked well for my middle schooler and even helped keep my then-elementary kids engaged and learning with minimal prep from me.

Fun Ideas for Your Apple Unit Study

Fall is a wonderful time to incorporate apples into your homeschool activities with your kids. You can plan a fun apple-themed week where they learn about the life cycle of apples, explore different types of apples, and even try their hand at cooking.

How about visiting an apple orchard for a field trip? They can pick their own apples and learn how they grow. At home, you can do art projects like painting with apples or making apple crafts.

There’s so much to enjoy, and it’s a great way to mix learning with fun while celebrating the flavors of the season.

Topics to Explore After Apple Activities

Apple-themed learning doesn’t have to stop with the fruit itself. When we’ve covered apple units, I’ve found that weaving in related subjects makes our lessons feel more well-rounded.

Fall is the perfect time to incorporate seasonal topics, too, especially with pumpkins and corn appearing everywhere. We’ve had some fun tying those in, especially when the older kids helped prep seasonal recipes or measured pumpkin seeds for math.

Here are more ideas you can try:

  • Photosynthesis and plant growth
  • Pollination and the role of bees
  • Nutrition and healthy eating
  • Geography of apple-producing regions
  • Weather and seasonal changes
  • Harvest traditions and fall crops like pumpkins and corn
