Fun Facts About Apples

Apples might seem pretty basic, but they have some quirky qualities that kids find really interesting.

  • Apples float because they are 25% air. This makes them perfect for science experiments in a sensory bin or the sink.
  • There are over 7,500 apple varieties worldwide. You could do an entire week of taste-testing and still not cover them all.
  • The apple tree is part of the rose family. Once I told my kids this, they began to smell apples differently, trying to find the “rose smell.”

Reading about apples adds extra context to the theme and helps build vocabulary and comprehension.

Why Teach Kids About Apples?

Kids see apples all the time, but they might not know much about them. A quick apple-themed week can open up new ideas and questions.

  • Understanding seasons: Apples tie in naturally with fall, helping kids connect changes in the environment with food.
  • Learning about farms: Apples are a great way to introduce where food comes from and how it gets to the store.
  • Making food connections: Kids are more likely to try fruit when they’ve done a fun project or activity around it.

Recommended Fall Printable Packs

If you’re building a full fall unit, these printable packs make it easy to stay on theme without a ton of prep.

What Skills Will They Practice?

These apple cutting printables provide kids with hands-on practice in early learning skills.

  • Fine motor control: All the cutting lines, whether straight or curved, give the hands and fingers a workout.
  • Letter recognition: The “APPLES” page helps them focus on the letters in the word and how they go together.
  • Sequencing: The cut-and-paste apple puzzle brings in logic and number order without feeling like a math lesson.

Supplies You’ll Need

These are basic supplies, and you likely already have them on hand.

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.
