What keeps apples from turning brown?
Have you ever cut up an apple and then left it out for a while, only to come back and find that it has turned brown? This process is known as oxidation and happens when the enzymes in the apple come into contact with oxygen in the air.
One way to prevent this from happening is to coat the apple slices in a mixture of lemon juice and water. The acid in the lemon juice prevents the enzymes from reacting with the oxygen in the air, thus keeping the apple slices from turning brown.
This is just one of the many ways that you can experiment with apples and learn about the different chemical reactions that take place.
Check out my list below to know more about this experiment and other apple science experiments that you can try!
