Benefits of lacing cards for kids
When my kids were younger, one of the activities that really held their attention was lacing cards. It’s such a simple concept, yet it builds important skills that carry over into handwriting and everyday tasks. Threading the string through the holes asks children to coordinate their hands and eyes in a way that develops patience and concentration.
Why are apples a great theme for fall activities?
I especially love using an apple theme because it’s so versatile during the fall season. Apples connect well with harvest time, back-to-school lessons, and even family trips to the orchard. For me, it felt natural to bring apples into our activities because they tied into the rhythms of our lessons.
Not only are these lacing cards fun and engaging for your children, but they also provide a great learning opportunity. With each apple card, you can discuss the different parts of an apple, such as the stem, the seeds, and the skin.
The lacing cards are also a great way to teach your child about apples and healthy eating. You can use the cards to start a discussion about the benefits of eating apples, the apple life cycle, how apples are grown and harvested, and even the different types of apples that are available.
Recommended Apple Books
Bring apples into your homeschool with any of these fun apple books. See how they grow or how you can turn them into treats. We’re fans of apple bread and apple chips.

What kids can learn from this apple lacing activity?
This printable also helps kids practice skills that are foundational in the early years.
- Fine Motor Control: Threading through the holes helps children strengthen finger muscles. This builds the coordination they’ll later need for writing and cutting.
- Hand-Eye Coordination: Matching the string to the holes and keeping the movement steady sharpens their ability to align what they see with what their hands do. I noticed how much smoother this became for my daughter after just a few sessions.
- Early Sequencing: Deciding where to start, what direction to go, and how to continue around the shape gives kids a chance to practice order and logical steps. These are small moments of problem-solving that make a difference in how they approach bigger tasks later.
Recommended Fall Printable Packs
If your child loves these activities, I’d suggest adding some seasonal printable packs. They keep kids engaged by providing a variety of ways to practice early learning skills.

What’s included in this fine motor apple printable?
Red Apple Card
This card features a bright red apple with holes around the edges. Kids can lace around the outside and enjoy the bold color that feels instantly recognizable.
Apple Core Card
The apple core adds variety by offering a different shape to lace around. My daughter used to find this one especially funny, and it gave her a chance to think about what happens after we enjoy our snack.
Apple Tree Card
This card shows a tree filled with apples. It gave my kids the chance to lace not just a single fruit but an entire scene, which added interest and kept them focused longer.
Green Apple Card
The green apple is another colorful option to add variety. My kids enjoyed having multiple apples to work with, which gave them extra practice without feeling repetitive.
Second Apple Tree Card
The second tree design provides a slightly different style. It kept my daughter from getting bored because she could choose which picture she wanted to lace that day.
How to keep the apple theme going?
Once your child finishes these cards, you can take the apple theme further with a few more activities. They work nicely together and give your child a fuller experience.
- Apple Coloring Pages: Coloring gives kids a chance to slow down and use creativity while strengthening pencil control. My kids always enjoyed mixing different shades of red and green.
- Apple Cutting Worksheets: Practicing with scissors can be tricky at first, but cutting worksheets makes it easier. I remember how proud my daughter felt the first time she cut smoothly around the apple shape.
- Apple Sorting Game: Using real or pretend apples, kids can sort by color or size. This activity helps them notice differences and build early math skills.
- Apple Counting Practice: Whether you use apples from your kitchen or pictures, counting them helps connect math with something concrete. My kids always found this more enjoyable than worksheets alone.
