How are rainbows formed?
Rainbows are such a fascinating sight! They form when sunlight passes through water droplets in the air, like after a rain shower. The sunlight bends and bounces inside the droplets, splitting them into different colors. This process creates the beautiful, colorful arcs we see in the sky.
These colors always show up in the same order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. This happens because each color bends at a different angle when the light leaves the droplet.

What paper is best for ice painting?
Thick paper like watercolor or mixed media paper is the best choice for this activity. It can soak up the water from the melting ice without tearing, keeping the colors bright.
Regular paper might get too wet and not show the colors as well, so it’s better to use thicker paper, especially with kids!

How to make this rainbow ice painting activity?
This activity was a big hit with the kids. They had a blast using colorful ice cubes to paint on paper, watching as the colors melted and creating beautiful patterns.
The whole process was simple: Let the kids pick out their favorite colors, then freeze some colored water and let the kids use the ice cubes to paint!
As they painted, the melting ice dripped and blended, making each artwork unique. The excitement of watching the colors swirl and merge was contagious, and the kids couldn’t get enough of it.

Rainbow Ice Painting Activity
With just a few materials and easy steps, you can create a fun and educational rainbow experience that kids will remember!
Materials
- Washable Paint
- Ice Tray
- Popsicle sticks
- Water
- Tray
- Watercolor Paper
Instructions
- Pour paint into the bottom of each ice cube slot.
- Fill the rest of the tray with water.
- Put a popsicle stick into each slot.
- Freeze the tray until the ice cubes are solid.
- Take the ice cubes out of the tray.
- Hold the popsicle stick and use the ice cubes to paint.
Notes
The more paint you add to the ice cube tray, the more vibrant the finished colors will be!
