How are rainbows formed?

Rainbows are such a fascinating sight! They form when sunlight passes through water droplets in the air, like after a rain shower. The sunlight bends and bounces inside the droplets, splitting them into different colors. This process creates the beautiful, colorful arcs we see in the sky.

These colors always show up in the same order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. This happens because each color bends at a different angle when the light leaves the droplet.

It’s amazing how light and water can make such a beautiful sight in the sky!

Reading about rainbows can be a wonderful complement to this ice painting activity. Books about rainbows can enhance kids’ understanding of colors and the natural phenomena that create these beautiful colors in the sky.

Rainbow Ice Painting Activity Supplies

Here are the supplies needed for you to get started with this activity:

What paper is best for ice painting?

Thick paper like watercolor or mixed media paper is the best choice for this activity. It can soak up the water from the melting ice without tearing, keeping the colors bright.

Regular paper might get too wet and not show the colors as well, so it’s better to use thicker paper, especially with kids!
