Rainbow Facts You Might Not Know

Rainbows are beautiful, but there’s more to them than meets the eye. Here are a few fun and lesser-known facts that always get my kids curious:

  • The order of colors in a rainbow is always the same, but there can be a secondary rainbow with the colors flipped.
  • Did you know that moonbows are real? These rare nighttime rainbows are caused by moonlight rather than sunlight and are usually much fainter.
  • Rainbows form complete circles, though we typically only catch the upper arc because the horizon blocks the rest. Occasionally, pilots or people observing from high elevations have seen the entire circle of a rainbow from above.

Some of my favorite rainbow-themed books are a great match with this printable. I like to add a read-aloud session right before we start the worksheets to get my child thinking visually and creatively.

Why do kids need to learn about rainbows?

Rainbows are nature’s most eye-catching way to teach kids about light, color, and weather. It’s not just about looking at something pretty—there’s real science behind what makes a rainbow appear. When I first explained this to my son, he was amazed that sunlight and rain could create something vivid.

Learning about rainbows can also open conversations about the natural world and build observation skills. It’s a simple topic, but you can expand it into weather patterns, color theory, or storytelling lessons. It’s a perfect example of how a child’s curiosity can lead to deeper learning when given the tools to explore.

Spring Printable Packs to Use Alongside This Printable

I’ve also created a few spring-themed printables that pair well with this rainbow pack. These are great if you’re planning a whole unit on spring or want to keep seasonal learning fresh.

What skills can kids learn from this printable?

This rainbow activity set may look fun and colorful, but there’s plenty of learning tucked inside each page. Here are a few skills your child will be practicing while they work through it:

  • Reading comprehension: With a short article on rainbows and follow-up questions, your child will learn how to find and understand key ideas in a text.
  • Visual discrimination: Matching images to words and finding words in a word search helps build attention to detail.
  • Creative thinking: One of the pages lets kids draw and write what they imagine at the end of the rainbow, encouraging open-ended thinking and early writing skills.

Rainbow Activity Pack Supplies

Here are the basic supplies I used when we completed this together:

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

Alongside books and printables, rainbow toys are a fun, hands-on way to support learning through color sorting, stacking, and open-ended play. I like to add a read-aloud session right before we start the worksheets to get my child thinking visually and creatively.
