Fun Facts About Fall

Most of us know about the leaves changing and pumpkin everything, but there are some lesser-known tidbits about autumn that are pretty fascinating.

  • Autumn can make you feel sleepier. The shift in daylight affects our melatonin production, which explains why we might feel a little drowsier during the day.
  • Fall has its own smell. The earthy scent we notice in autumn comes from dying plants releasing a chemical called geosmin, which humans can detect even in tiny amounts.
  • Birds aren’t just flying south. Some species actually fly west or even change altitude rather than heading south, depending on their food sources and weather patterns.

One of our favorite ways to welcome a new season is through themed read-alouds. I always keep a small collection of fall-themed books on hand for cozy afternoon reading sessions.

  • Seasonal routines: Kids begin to understand how seasons impact our lives, like changes in clothing or food.
  • Cultural traditions: Fall is tied to festivals and holidays, offering a chance to talk about different customs and family traditions.

What Skills Kids Will Learn From These Fall-themed Activities

These fall ideas sneak in all kinds of learning without it feeling like schoolwork. When we did these with my daughter around 2nd grade, she was having fun, and I was thrilled knowing she was learning.

  • Fine motor skills: Cutting, gluing, and placing small items like beans or pom poms work those small hand muscles.
  • Early math concepts: Measuring, counting, and estimating show up in lots of these ideas.
  • Creative thinking: Art and sensory activities let kids use their imaginations and make something unique.
  • Scientific observation: The experiments are fun, but also sneak in basic science skills like predicting, observing, and recording results.
