All you need to do yoga is a clear, quiet space. Having a nice mat, some soothing light or music and perhaps some scents in the air are all great options, but not necessary. Here are some of our favorite yoga mats for kids.

Bonus: they double as a great napping spot or quiet spot as well!

Yoga is a great physical exercise for kids. It builds strength, endurance and aerobic capacity. It helps to increase flexibility, balance and coordination. And yoga can improve focus and concentration, as well as promote stress relief and relaxation.

After all, it takes a certain amount of focus to hold a pose and stay balanced. Then, when your child is able to maintain a pose and masters each position, they gain confidence and a sense of achievement. And with that comes resilience and self-regulation as they connect mind and body.

There’s some evidence to show that regular yoga practice can help special needs kids, especially kids with ADHD and anxiety. Yoga helps with the inattention and impulsivity seen in kids with ADHD, and it’s been shown to improve their social and academic skills.

How to teach yoga to kids

One of the best ways to teach kids yoga is to make it fun. Some yoga teachers use animals to help explain the poses, encouraging kids to imitate the various animals while stretching.

Others use fun stories about how the original creators of the poses created them while trying to imitate the shapes they saw in nature. Try using a prop with the printable yoga cards, or use them to create an obstacle course in your backyard. However you use yoga at home, make it fun.

Don’t forget about the breathing and meditation exercises that are part of yoga. Teaching kids how to focus on their breathing, how to control it and feel all their body increases both body awareness and the ability to self-regulate.

And practicing controlled breathing techniques can help with stress relief. It teaches kids how to relax — a skill that can be incredibly useful as they get older.

There are so many benefits to doing yoga regularly. Use these yoga poses printables for kids to start a yoga habit in your home. Get your kids exercising regularly, and see them grow healthier, physically and mentally.

And join your kids! Parents can enjoy all the perks of doing yoga just as much as the kids. Make it a family activity today.
