Watermelon season is here, and one way to enjoy it is with these Watermelon Coloring Pages. These printables are a fun, screen-free activity that lets your kids explore the sweet and summery world of watermelons.

I’ll explain everything included in the printable, why I love using it in our lesson, and how it can reinforce fundamental skills while still being light and fun. Stay tuned for some surprising facts and extra summer ideas, too.

Watermelon Facts You Probably Didn’t Know
It’s always interesting to toss in a few facts while we color. My older two love trivia, and these got their attention:
- Watermelons are technically berries. Even though they’re huge and have a rind, botanically speaking, watermelons are considered a type of berry called a “pepo.”
- You can eat the rind. The green outer layer is edible and often used in pickles or stir-fry recipes in various cultures.
- There are over 1,200 varieties worldwide. From yellow-fleshed types to miniature ones, watermelons come in many shapes and sizes beyond the classic picnic version.
Recommended Watermelon Books
If you’re building a theme around watermelons, I have a handful of picture books I like to read during snack time. These are lighthearted, easy reads that tie into the activity without feeling too structured.

Why Learn About Watermelons?
Beyond the coloring fun, watermelons are a great entry point for learning about fruits, farming, and nutrition.
- Introduce plant life cycles. The watermelon life cycle page opens up a simple conversation about how food grows.
- Build healthy food awareness. Kids are more curious about what they eat when they’ve explored it in fun ways.
- Connect to summer memories. Watermelon is a staple at picnics and family gatherings, making it naturally nostalgic and engaging.
Recommended Summer Printables
If you’re looking to fill in those quieter afternoons or just want something ready-to-go while you prep lunch, I have a few summer-themed printable packs in the shop that work well with this activity.
Skills Kids Practice With This Printable
At first glance, it may look like simple coloring sheets, but there’s more going on here than just filling in lines.
- Fine motor coordination: Coloring inside the shapes and cutting out the life cycle stages helps strengthen hand control.
- Reading simple sentences: A few pages have short, easy-to-read phrases that boost early reading confidence.
- Observation and creativity: They’re looking closely at patterns like watermelon seeds, rind stripes, and more—and then making their own color choices.
Recommended Watermelon Toys
For hands-on learners, we sometimes rotate in themed toys that accompany what we’re reading or coloring. I keep a small basket of fruit-themed items that work well with printables like this.

Supplies You’ll Need for the Printable Fruit Worksheets
You don’t need a ton of prep time to enjoy these. Here’s what I like to have on hand:
- Printer (I have this one)
- Paper
- Crayons or colored pencils
I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.
What’s included in the watermelon activity sheets?
Round watermelons with slices
These pages feature whole round watermelons paired with a slice on each. Seeds are scattered throughout, giving kids plenty to color and notice.
Watermelon patch scene
This one shows part of a patch—vines, leaves, and a few ripening fruits. It’s fun to point out the different parts of the plant as we color.
“You’re one in a melon!” text art
This page mixes a cute phrase with watermelon slices in the background. My daughter always giggles when she colors it.
Sentence page: “Pick it, slice it, and enjoy the sweet taste!”
This page has multiple slices of watermelon and a short sentence to read below. It’s a good pick for practicing reading and coloring simultaneously.
Watermelon life cycle
This page gives a simple visual of the stages from seed to vine to fruit. It’s an interactive way to learn about the watermelon life cycle.
