Fun Facts About Glue That Kids May Not Know

  • Glue was originally made from animal parts like bones and hooves.
  • Some types of glue can conduct electricity, especially those made for special electronic uses.
  • There’s a natural glue made by sea creatures, like mussels, that’s strong even underwater.

Science books that include hands-on experiments are a great way to build curiosity and keep learning active. They’re perfect for sparking interest and getting kids to ask more questions.

Why should kids learn about glue and how it works?

Understanding how glue works isn’t just about sticky messes. It helps kids learn more about materials, chemistry, and observation.

  • It introduces them to simple chemistry ideas.
  • It improves observation and discussion skills.
  • It provides real-life examples of how materials interact with each other.
  • It keeps their hands busy while their brains learn.

If you’re looking for science printables, I’ve also created several hands-on printable packs. These are perfect if your kids enjoy topics like animals or Earth science.

The science behind the Glue Experiment

This activity isn’t just about swirls and color. It’s a great introduction to surface tension and polymers in a kid-friendly way.

  • The glue holds the food coloring in place until the soap touches it.
  • Dish soap breaks the surface tension, allowing colors to move.
  • The glue’s stretchy molecules create a cool swirling effect as everything mixes.

Swirling Glue STEM Activity Supplies

Making the Swirling Glue Experiment

When we did this activity, I had my daughter gather everything while I cleared the table. She liked having control over the supplies, and it gave her a bit of independence in the process.

She was curious to see how the colors would move and had fun guessing what would happen before we added the dish soap. We watched the swirls slowly move across the plate, and it was oddly calming.

What I appreciated most was how it opened up a conversation about how glue works. We kept it simple, but the visual part of the experiment really made things click. This activity takes about 2 minutes to set up and less than 5 minutes of active time.
