What is the Crystal Growth Method?

How do we make this growing crystal activity?
My kids were excited to start, especially seeing the colorful pipe cleaners. They couldn’t wait to twist them into fun shapes, like stars and hearts.
It was a simple activity, but watching them use their hands to create shapes made it feel extra special.
Next, we mixed the warm water and sugar together in the jar. The kids were full of questions and kept guessing what would happen next. As we carefully set the jar up, I could feel the excitement building.
The waiting part was a great chance to teach them about patience, and they were so eager to check on the crystals later.
When the crystals finally started to grow, my kids were over the moon. They couldn’t believe how the shapes they made from pipe cleaners turned into these sparkly crystals. It was amazing to see how something so simple could turn into something so beautiful.
We talked about how the sugar and water worked together to create the crystals, and it made for a fun, hands-on learning experience. It was such a great way to spend time together while also learning something new.
How does this crystal experiment work?
This crystal experiment works by dissolving sugar in warm water. The warm water helps the sugar dissolve more easily, creating a super-saturated solution. As the water cools, it can no longer hold all of the sugar, so the extra sugar starts to come out and attach to whatever object is in the water.
That’s where the fun shapes we made with the pipe cleaners come in. They act as a base for the crystals to grow on. Over time, the sugar forms tiny crystal structures, making everything sparkle.
It’s really nice to see how it all comes together. As the crystals begin to form on the pipe cleaners, they grow bigger and bigger, turning the shapes into something you can see and touch.
The kids were fascinated watching the crystals appear little by little. It’s an excellent way to introduce them to the science behind how crystals are made, and it’s incredible how something so simple can create such a striking visual transformation.

How to Grow a Crystal

Instructions
- Fill a clear jar with warm water, leaving some space at the top.
- Add sugar and stir until it's fully dissolved.
- Shape a pipe cleaner into a fun design.
- Attach the pipe cleaner to a popsicle stick so it hangs inside the jar, ensuring it doesn’t touch the sides or bottom.
- Let the jar sit undisturbed for a few hours or overnight.
- After 24 hours, check out the crystals that have formed on the pipe cleaner.
