Polar Bear Facts for Preschoolers
Let’s explore some fun polar bear facts that can be shared with preschoolers.
Where Do Polar Bears Live?
Polar bears are native to the Arctic regions of North America, Russia, Greenland, and Norway. They love cold climates and live on sheets of sea ice that form during winter months. This is why they’re sometimes referred to as “ice bears” or “nanuq”—the Inuit word for “polar bear.”
What Do Polar Bears Eat?
Polar bears have a hearty appetite! They eat mostly seals but also enjoy fish, eggs, birds, mussels, crabs and other small creatures found in the Arctic region.
A polar bear will usually hunt one or two seals per week during hunting season—which lasts from April through June. During this time they need to consume a lot of food in order to store up energy for the winter months when food is scarce.
How Big Are Polar Bears?
Polar bears are huge! An average adult male can weigh up to 1,500 pounds (680 kg) while an adult female can weigh up to 600 pounds (270 kg). That makes them the largest land carnivores in the world—even bigger than lions and tigers!
