We do a lot of life cycle learning in our house because I think that it’s important to learn the processes of how things grow and evolve. From plants to animals, we like to study it all.
And with Thanksgiving literally right around the corner, the time has never been more perfect to study turkeys and their life cycles as well. Who knows – you just might learn something new as well about these big lovely birds!

Why do kids need to learn about turkeys?
Studying turkeys helps kids connect fall themes with real-life animal science. It also strengthens their understanding of growth patterns.
- Observation skills: Recognizing differences between stages teaches kids to look closely at natural details.
- Seasonal awareness: Learning about animals common in autumn helps kids relate to what they see and hear during the season.
- Animal biology: Understanding stages of development builds stronger early science foundations.
Recommended Turkey Books
Thanksgiving books are always fun to read. Because what’s not to love about Thanksgiving? It’s a holiday that is all about food, turkey, and family! And those three things combined are what a lot of these books are about.
Even if you’re not a fan of eating turkey, you can still appreciate the life of one and add some fun books to your reading plan. All of these books star turkeys as the main character and are a fun way to have the kids sit down and enjoy reading a great book.
We like to take turns reading and really delve into the pages of the books. Some are funny, and some offer a few more facts about turkeys than others.
Either way, they’re great to have on hand. The kids can appreciate having book options in the house because they’re great for sitting down, opening up, and reading.
I tend to pull these books out in November and keep them on hand throughout the month leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday.
The kids cycle through them, and will often read them multiple times – and then when they’re done, I put them back in the book box until next year!

Fun ways to learn about turkeys
There are actually a lot of ways that you can learn about turkeys this time of year. The kids can easily open up any of the books and ready about turkeys as part of the learning process.
You can also see if there are any turkeys in your neck of the woods and go out and see them in person. Some people have turkeys on their farm and that would be the safest place to look.
Make sure that the kids understand to never go out in the woods alone looking for turkeys because there is turkey hunting seasons that happen and it’s not safe to wander during that time.
If there is a bird sanctuary or a farmer who has turkeys, give them a call and ask if you can schedule a trip to take a look!
Make sure to talk to the kids about the life cycle of turkeys before you go and see them. That way, when they see a turkey face-to-face, they can identify what phase the turkey is in, and then you can have a discussion about it as well.

You can even take a notebook and have the kids observe the turkeys in their habitat or area where they live. They can write down what they do during the time that they see them, what they eat, how they sound, and anything else unique that they want to record.
Once you get back home, it’s a great time to talk about the observations and have a conversation.
