History and Fun Facts about Halloween
Halloween is a fun and spooky holiday that is celebrated almost all over the world.

- Giving out candy on Halloween started in America in the 1920s as a way to prevent kids from playing mischievous pranks.
- The tradition of carved pumpkins originated in Ireland. People used to carve turnips and put candles inside them to ward off evil spirits.
- “Trick-or-treat” comes from the medieval practice of giving food or money to poor people on All Saints’ Day (November 1st).
- The word “Halloween” comes from the Scottish term “All Hallows’ Eve,” which means “the eve of All Saints’ Day.”9 In ancient times, people believed that ghosts came back to earth on All Hallows’ Eve (October 31st). To ward off these ghosts, people would wear masks and costumes when they went outside.
Today, we still dress up in costumes on Halloween as a fun way to celebrate the holiday!
