Cool Facts About Canada You Might Not Know

Canada is more than maple syrup and cold winters. When we worked through this printable, my daughter was surprised at how much she didn’t know. Here are a few fun facts you can chat about while your kids work through the sheets:

  • Canada has two official languages: English and French. Many signs, labels, and documents across the country are written in both languages, especially in Quebec.
  • The Canadian flag is relatively new: It was officially adopted in 1965. Before that, Canada used different versions of the British flag.
  • There’s a bear on the money: The Canadian two-dollar coin, affectionately called the “toonie,” features a polar bear on one side.

Canada Books Worth Reading

If you’d like to explore the topic further, I recommend a few Canada-themed books for your reading list. They kept my kids engaged with colorful pages and interesting info without feeling too textbook-like.

Why Should Kids Learn About Countries Like Canada?

Even if you don’t live in Canada, learning about other countries gives kids a wider lens on the world. It sparks discussions about history, geography, and diverse ways of life.

  • Geographic awareness: Knowing where other countries are helps kids develop map skills and understand the world beyond their neighborhood.
  • Cultural appreciation: Kids gain a glimpse into how others live, what they celebrate, and the symbols they value.
  • Connection to global topics: Canada ties into conversations about ecosystems (think polar bears) and global cooperation.

If your homeschool rhythm shifts during summer like mine does, I keep a stash of themed worksheets on hand to fill short pockets of time. These printable packs are my go-to when we want to stay productive without a full lesson.

I used this Canada printable with my daughter when she was younger, and it really helped her stay sharp while still having fun. Here’s what’s packed in skill-wise:

  • Reading comprehension: Kids answer short questions and decode simple facts, which helps them build reading confidence.
  • Geography knowledge: From provinces to capitals and maps, this pack supports early map reading and place recognition.
  • Critical thinking: Unscrambling Canadian symbols and matching provinces to their capitals allows them to use problem-solving strategies.

What Supplies Will You Need?

This pack is pretty low-prep, which I always appreciate. You probably have most of what you need already.

  • Printer (I have this one)
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Crayons
  • A map of Canada (or access to one online)

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s included in the Canada printable pack?

Canadian symbols

Kids unscramble the names of Canadian symbols, such as the beaver, inukshuk, maple leaf, polar bear, totem pole, and the flag. Each one is paired with a black-and-white drawing that they can color.

Canada facts

This page includes five questions related to Canada’s geography and basic facts. It concludes with a blank map, allowing kids to mark the capital city.

Provinces and their capitals

This activity asks children to match each province with its capital by drawing lines. It’s a great challenge for mid-elementary students, as it builds memory and association.

Canada day

Kids answer three questions about Canada Day, including the date it’s celebrated, when the first flag was used, and the symbolism of the flag. There’s also a festive coloring page featuring Parliament Hill.

Canada is special

A creative page where children draw a picture of what comes to mind when they think of Canada. It’s open-ended and perfect for encouraging thoughtful reflection.

Other Fun Canada Activities to Try

If you want to continue learning after completing this printable pack, I have some ideas and additional resources that are just right.
