Uncommon but Cool Facts About What Plants Need

You probably already know plants need sunlight and water, but here are a few lesser-known facts that might surprise you:

  • Plants need air movement: While not every plant needs wind, some air circulation is essential to keep diseases away and help plants grow strong.
  • Some plants can grow without soil: Hydroponics lets plants grow in water with nutrients, which is excellent for indoor gardens.
  • Too much sunlight can hurt: Just like us, plants get sunburned or stressed if they get too much direct light.

Why do kids need to learn about plants?

Understanding how plants grow is more than just a science topic—it connects to many parts of our lives. Plants play a huge role in everything we eat and the air we breathe. When kids learn about what keeps a plant alive, they also learn how to care for living things around them.

We used this worksheet right after planting seeds in small cups. After a few days, my son noticed how the plant leaned toward the sun. That led to a conversation about sunlight and how plants “know” where to get their light. These moments stick.

Do you want to build a whole spring-themed unit? I have two printable packs that pair perfectly with this worksheet. They’re a fun way to build on what your child learns about plant needs.

Plant Needs Coloring Page

This page shows two kids tending to their plants. Water is pouring, sunshine is shining down, and even a few bugs are buzzing around. It sets the scene for what a healthy plant environment looks like.

What My Plant Needs

Kids trace the names of each plant’s need: sun, soil, wind, and water. After tracing and writing, they color the images, reinforcing language and science concepts.

Draw What Plants Need to Grow

This is more open-ended. Your child can draw their version of the things plants need to thrive. I used this page to talk with my kids about our garden and how we take care of it.

Growing a Plant

Pam wants to grow a plant and needs the right tools. Kids color in all the items to help her develop a healthy plant. This page was fun because my daughter gave a whole backstory about Pam’s garden.

Plant Needs Cut and Paste Activity

Here, your child cuts out different pictures and sorts them into two boxes: “Plant Needs” and “Plants Don’t Need.” This excellent critical thinking task helps them decide what truly helps a plant grow.
