This bottle tornado science project gives kids a clear model of how spinning air creates a funnel shape. When my older boys were in elementary school, they loved seeing the water twist into a tight spiral. It made the idea of rotating wind much easier to picture than just reading about it in a book.

Making the Tornado in a Bottle Activity
This activity was quick to set up, and my older kids were curious right away about what would happen once we turned the bottles over. They predicted the water would just rush down, and at first, that is exactly what it looked like. We had a few attempts where the water only glugged back and forth, which led to some great discussion about why it wasn’t forming a funnel.
Once we adjusted how we held and moved the bottles, we finally saw the spinning column take shape. Seeing that clear tunnel form in the center grabbed their attention. It gave us a chance to discuss how motion changes how water flows and why air needs a path to move upward.
We also learned that small details matter. If the bottles were not sealed tightly, we ended up with leaks. If we did not move it with enough control, the vortex would not appear. Those small challenges turned into problem-solving moments and helped my kids understand how real tornadoes form from movement and pressure.

Tornado in a Bottle Experiment
Materials
- 2 2- Liter plastic pop bottles clean and dry
- Water
- Pitcher
- Glitter
- Funnel
- Food coloring optional
- Metal washer about 1 inch outer diameter with a 3/8 to 1/2 inch inner hole, so it fits over the bottle opening
- Duct tape
- Tape
Instructions
- Fill one bottle halfway with water.
- Add food coloring and swirl to mix.
- Place the metal washer on top.
- Attach the second bottle upside down.
- Secure tightly with tape.
- Flip and swirl to create the vortex.
