What are the Different Types of Extreme Weather?

Let’s talk about some types of extreme weather. These are weather events that are strong, sometimes scary, but always interesting! Here they are:

Tornadoes

These are violently rotating columns of air that are in contact with both the surface of the Earth and a cumulonimbus cloud. Imagine a giant spinning column of air that touches the ground and the bottom of a big, dark cloud. That’s a tornado! They’re very powerful and can pick up things like cars and houses.

Hurricanes, Typhoons, and Cyclones

These are all names for the same thing: a huge storm with lots of wind and rain that forms over warm ocean water. The name changes depending on where in the world the storm happens.

Floods

This happens when an area of land that is normally dry suddenly gets submerged under water. It can occur for many reasons including heavy rainfall, tidal surges, or melting snow and ice.

Heatwaves

These are prolonged periods of excessively hot weather, which may be accompanied by high humidity.

Blizzards

These are severe snowstorms with high winds and low visibility. Think of a snowstorm, but much stronger, with the wind blowing the snow everywhere. It can get so bad that you can’t see very far in front of you.

Droughts

These occur when there is an absence of precipitation over an extended period, resulting in a water shortage. The ground can get so dry that plants have a hard time growing.

Hailstorms

These are characterized by the production of numerous balls of ice that fall from the sky like rain which can cause damage to structures, crops, or even people.

Each of these extreme weather events has unique characteristics and impacts on our environment and societies. Understanding them helps us prepare for and mitigate their effects.

Your kids will have a blast learning about each one.
