Tornado in a Bottle Experiment

This simple science activity models how a spinning vortex forms using water and air pressure.

Ingredients

  • 2 2- Liter plastic pop bottles clean and dry
  • Water
  • Pitcher
  • Glitter
  • Funnel
  • Food coloring optional
  • Metal washer about 1 inch outer diameter with a 3/8 to 1/2 inch inner hole, so it fits over the bottle opening
  • Duct tape
  • Tape

Instructions

  • Fill one bottle halfway with water.
  • Add food coloring and swirl to mix.
  • Place the metal washer on top.
  • Attach the second bottle upside down.
  • Secure tightly with tape.
  • Flip and swirl to create the vortex.
