Fun and Surprising Road Trip Facts

Road trips are more than just a way to get from one place to another. They can become an adventure full of memories and unexpected learning. Here are a few quirky facts to share with your kids:

  • The first road trip happened in 1888. Without telling her husband, Bertha Benz took the very first long-distance drive in a car to prove it worked. It was 66 miles long and helped kickstart the automobile industry.
  • Some highways are musical. Certain roads in the U.S. are built with grooves that play a melody when your tires hit them at the right speed. It’s like a drive-through concert.
  • There’s a road trip museum. The U.S. has a National Road Museum in Ohio where you can see old maps, vehicles, and travel gear from decades past. Great inspiration if you’re ever in the area.

Before heading out, I pack a few books to keep my kids engaged. If you’re looking for stories to pair with your trip, I have a few favorites we love flipping through together.

What do you need to prepare for a road trip with kids?

I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) that being prepared makes all the difference on a family road trip. While you can’t plan for every surprise, you can definitely set yourself up for a smoother ride.

Here are six things I always pack:

  • Reusable water bottles
  • Healthy snacks (plus a few fun ones)
  • A lap desk or clipboard for activities
  • Baby wipes (a must, even if your kids are older)
  • A small bin for trash
  • Printables and books within easy reach

Skills Kids Can Learn from this Printable

These Road Trip Activity Sheets aren’t just about passing the time. They also help kids build real learning skills while they play.

  • Fine motor control: Activities like tracing lines and coloring build hand strength and pencil control, which are key for writing.
  • Pattern recognition: The pattern pages help kids recognize and continue sequences—a skill used in early math.
  • Observation and focus: The “Color What You See” page encourages kids to look outside the window and stay alert to their environment.

Recommended Road Trip Toys

Bringing a few travel-friendly toys can make a big difference in how your child feels about the trip. I always keep a small stash of quiet, open-ended toys that don’t have a million pieces.

Supplies Needed for the Road Trip Worksheets for Early Learners

Before you print out the activity sheets, here are a few things I recommend having ready:

  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Clipboard or lap desk
  • Zip pouch to keep the pages and supplies together

What’s included in the road trip worksheets?

Road Trip Tracing

Kids trace lines to help cars get to different road signs. This page supports early writing skills and hand-eye coordination.

Color What You See

Children mark off each picture by coloring it as they recognize it. This turns looking out the window into an interactive seek-and-find challenge, an excellent boredom buster.

Fill The Tank

Kids color the fuel bar to match a given number. This one sneaks in a bit of counting and number recognition.

Road Trip Patterns

Cut and paste the right images to complete the patterns. A simple and engaging way to introduce sequencing.

Road Trip Coloring Page

Your child will color the road trip-themed scene and trace the sentence “Let’s go on a road trip!” It’s great for their creativity and reading practice.

Fun Summer Activities for Kids to Try

Summer doesn’t have to mean screen time overload. Plenty of fun ways to stay active and learning without being stuck indoors exist.
