Interesting Facts About Fall

Preschoolers love learning new facts, especially if it sounds a little weird or magical. These fall tidbits are fun to talk about while exploring leaves outside or crafting indoors.

  • Pumpkins are technically fruits: Because they contain seeds and grow from flowers, pumpkins fall under the fruit category. That’s a fun surprise for kids who usually think of fruit as sweet and small.
  • Fall has a different start date depending on who you ask: Meteorological fall begins on September 1, while astronomical fall starts around September 22. It depends on whether you’re following the calendar or the Earth’s position in space.
  • Leaves help trees recycle nutrients: Before leaves drop, trees pull valuable nutrients back into their branches and trunks. It’s their way of storing energy to survive the colder months.

I always keep a seasonal stack of fall books nearby. They’re perfect for settling down after outdoor play or introducing new science ideas in a gentle, fun way.

Why Should Kids Learn About Fall?

Understanding fall helps preschoolers connect to their world and learn through real experiences.

  • Builds nature awareness: Kids begin to notice how trees, animals, and weather shift with the seasons.
  • Encourages observation: Fall offers numerous opportunities to look, listen, and explore with all the senses.
  • Adds rhythm to the year: Seasonal learning helps set a natural pace that makes routines feel steady.
  • Supports early science skills: Simple cause-and-effect, comparisons, and hands-on investigation come naturally.
