Interesting Leaf Facts for Kindergarten
Leaves are a great topic for early learners because they’re something kids see every day. Once they learn how leaves grow, change, and fall, they start noticing things on your nature walks you might not even point out.
- Leaves change color because of sunlight. When there’s less daylight in the fall, chlorophyll breaks down, and the green fades away, letting other pigments show through.
- Some leaves are edible. Lettuce, spinach, and kale are all examples of leaves that we can eat. My kids were always surprised by that.
- Leaves “breathe.” Tiny openings on the surface, called stomata, help them exchange gases. It’s how they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
Favorite Fall Books
These leaf worksheets pair well with cozy read-aloud time. I’ve always found that a good seasonal book helps my daughter slow down and focus before we pull out the crayons.

Why Teach Kids About Leaves?
Even the most basic leaf-themed activity gets kids asking questions about the natural world. That curiosity is where science learning begins.
- Observational skills: They learn to closely examine details such as shape, color, and size.
- Pattern recognition: Leaves come in different forms, and comparing them builds early sorting and classifying skills.
- Seasonal awareness: Understanding why leaves change helps kids notice time passing and seasonal rhythms.
Fall Printable Packs I Recommend
If you want more fall-themed worksheets and hands-on pages, I’ve got a few printables that go really well with these leaf sheets. They all have a fun seasonal theme with learning baked in.

What can kids learn from these leaf worksheets?
This printable covers a mix of early academic and fine motor skills. It’s simple enough for kindergartners to do independently after a little modeling.
- Fine motor control: Tracing and cutting give kids practice with hand-eye coordination and pencil grip.
- Counting and number recognition: One page includes a simple tree activity where kids count falling leaves and draw them in.
- Scientific thinking: The leaf investigation page encourages them to observe and describe real-world objects.
My Favorite Educational Fall Toys
While we don’t go overboard with seasonal toys, I do like keeping a few hands-on manipulatives in a bin during the fall. It helps bridge the gap between work and play for my kindergartner.

Supplies You’ll Need for These Leaf Pages
Nothing fancy here. You probably already have most of this at home.
- Printer (I have this one)
- Paper
- Pencil
- Crayons
- Scissors
- Glue
- Real leaves (optional for the investigation page)
I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer to take advantage of their program, which sends ink cartridges when your printer runs low.
What’s included in the leaf printable pack?
Leaf Tracing
Kids trace over the dotted lines of different leaf shapes and then color them. This helps build control for handwriting and attention to detail.
Leaf Puzzle
This page features a cut-and-paste activity where kids assemble a four-piece puzzle of a red leaf. My daughter used to love puzzles like this and always tried to see how fast she could match them up.
Falling Leaves
Children look at the number on the tree and draw the same number of leaves falling down. It’s a simple but effective way to build number sense with a seasonal twist.
Leaf Investigation
This page is great for heading outside. Kids find a real leaf, draw it, describe it, and identify its size and color. This one always led to great outdoor conversations for us.
Find the Word
Here, your child will search for the letters that spell “leaf” and color them in. It’s a great, quick activity for letter recognition and letter sounds.
