Facts About Plants for Kids

When I was teaching my kids about plants, I loved sprinkling in fun facts they hadn’t heard before. It made them more curious and excited to learn about nature all around them.

  • Some plants can “hear.” Certain flowers respond to the sound of bees by producing sweeter nectar.
  • Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth—it can grow over 30 inches in just one day.
  • A cactus can store gallons of water in its stem to survive for months without rain.

Show your kids how plants grow from seed to full plant with their own plant-growing kits. With a little work and consistent maintenance, they can see how life can bloom if they nurture their plants.

How to teach the life cycle of a plant?

Since we’re in Canada, we have a relatively short growing season, so by May, we’re getting our gardens ready. My daughter loves to come with me to the garden center to pick out plants and seeds.

She chose flower seeds and had her flower pots where she diligently watered her plants last summer, and was rewarded with large blooming flowers. She especially loved growing her sunflowers.

Seeing the different stages of the plant life cycle and then witnessing it bloom was very exciting for her. What a cool way to teach the lesson, right?

Teach your kids how to tend a garden, help nature, and attract bees and birds to your backyard.

Why do kids need to learn about the plant life cycle?

Learning about the plant life cycle helps kids see the full picture of how living things grow, change, and thrive. My kids were fascinated as they watched seeds turn into sprouts, and sprouts turn into blooming plants right on our kitchen windowsill.

We worked it into our science routine last spring, and it led to so many curious questions and even a mini garden experiment. Following the entire process gave them a real understanding of time, care, and observation—plus, they were proud of what they grew themselves. It’s one of those science topics that sticks because they can literally see it happen.

What can kids learn from these books?

Reading plant-themed books isn’t just about science—it builds a strong foundation for all kinds of learning. Every time I read these with my kids, I notice them making new connections with the world around them.

  • Observation Skills – Plant books encourage kids to notice details like leaf shapes, colors, and changes in growth. These small things help train their brains to pay attention and ask questions.
  • Vocabulary Growth – Words like germination, pollination, and chlorophyll are just the beginning. Repeated exposure to science terms in a story format makes them stick.
  • Sequencing and Comprehension – Following the stages of a plant’s life cycle helps kids grasp the idea of order and how one step leads to the next. It’s beneficial for early readers and writers.
