The Life Cycle of a Pumpkin for Kids
Pumpkins are more than just a cute Halloween decoration or a famous holiday pie ingredient. They have a cool life cycle that is perfect for young kids to learn about. We’re going to explore the journey of a pumpkin from seed to harvesting and let your kids dive into the science behind how it grows.
Stage 1: Seeds
The life cycle of a pumpkin begins with a tiny seed, which can be found inside the flesh of an adult pumpkin. To start growing your own pumpkin, you will need to plant the seed in warm soil, about an inch deep.
Stage 2: Seedling
Not long after, the seeds will sprout and begin to have roots, which will anchor the plant into the soil or potting mix.
Stage 3: Vines
As the pumpkin plant grows, it will develop several leaves and a long vine that will stretch across your backyard or farm.
Stage 4: Flowers
As the pumpkin plant continues to grow each day, the plant will produce large, yellow blossoming flowers. These will eventually give way to small pumpkins in color green that will grow in size over a period of several months!
Final Stage: Mature Pumpkins!
Once your pumpkins are fully matured, they will have gone through a gradual color change, from green to a beautiful shade of orange. That is the time to harvest them, so they stay fresh and last long!
