Fascinating Facts About Blood

Blood is way more complex than most people think. Here are three facts that surprised me and my kids (and me, too):

  • Blood accounts for approximately 7-8% of a person’s body weight. That’s quite a bit when you think about how small it looks when you get a paper cut.
  • There are over 60,000 miles of blood vessels in the human body. Yes, even in kids! It blew our minds to imagine something so long fitting inside our bodies.
  • White blood cells live anywhere from a few hours to a few days. They’re short-lived but work tirelessly to protect us from getting sick.

Why should kids learn about blood circulation?

Understanding blood circulation helps kids better understand how their bodies function internally. It helps answer questions like why their heart beats faster after running or what happens when they get a cut, and it starts to heal. These are real-life moments that become teachable opportunities.

When kids can visualize the system, they are more likely to appreciate how their bodies work for them. They enjoy labeling diagrams as we discuss oxygen and carbon dioxide, turning it into a whole-family lesson.

Nothing fancy is required, just basic school materials you probably already have at home:

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.
