- Dots candy (4 colors needed)
- Toothpicks
- 4 small bowls

Four Chemical Bases Found in DNA
The Dots candies represent the four chemical bases found in DNA: Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, and Guanine. These bases are essential parts of the DNA structure, and each one always pairs with a specific partner: Adenine pairs with Thymine, and Cytosine pairs with Guanine.
Assigning different colors of candy to each of these bases helps kids visualize how DNA works. As they match the pairs using candy, they begin to understand that DNA isn’t random—it follows a pattern. This hands-on approach simplifies an important scientific concept and makes it fun to remember.
Making the Candy DNA STEM Activity
I brought out the supplies after lunch, and my kids lit up when they saw the candy. My daughter picked the nucleotide colors, ensuring each pair was easy to remember. My older boys enjoyed the fun, helping their younger sister match the pairs correctly.
As we built the model, we discussed why Adenine pairs with Thymine and Cysteine with Guanine. Hearing them use the vocabulary naturally was great. They even corrected each other when someone got it wrong. That’s the kind of moment that tells me they’re learning.
By the end, we had colorful, twisty models that showed what DNA looks like in a way they could see and touch. And yes, we had a few nibbles here and there. It’`s science, after all.
DNA Model with Candy
Materials
- 2 Twizzlers or licorice
- Dots candy 4 different colors
- Toothpicks
- 4 small bowls
Instructions
- Gather your supplies.
- Separate the Dots candy into four bowls by color.
- Assign each color to a DNA base.
- Pair colors: A with T, and C with G.
- Stick a toothpick through one Twizzler.
- Add one pair of Dots to the toothpick.
- Repeat with more toothpicks, switching A-T with T-A, and C-G with G-C.
- Add the second Twizzler on the other side of the toothpicks to form the helix.
