Weekly Theme Ideas by Age Bracket

I like planning around a simple weekly theme. It helps me stay focused and gives the kids something to look forward to. Here’s a quick list of theme ideas broken down by age group.

  • Early learners: colors, animals, weather, shapes, nursery rhymes
  • Middle learners: space, human body, plants, maps, classic stories
  • Older learners: world history, inventors, ecosystems, current events, writing prompts

If you’re ever feeling stuck, tired, or unsure of what you’re doing, these are the books I keep nearby. They’re written for moms and filled with practical encouragement.

How do you organize your homeschool?

Everyone does it differently, but here’s what has worked for me as a mom trying to keep things somewhat sane.

  • Start the week with a plan – I set aside Sunday night to write down our focus for the week and any outside activities.
  • Use baskets or bins for each child – This helps them know where their materials are, and keeps papers from getting lost.
  • Keep it visible – I tape our weekly plan to the fridge. It’s a simple move that helps everyone stay on track.
  • Don’t overschedule – I leave space for life to happen. A full planner doesn’t mean it’s productive.

Keeping all the supplies, printables, and random projects in one place can be tricky. These are my go-to organization tools to help keep the clutter down and the days smoother.

How can this weekly planner help you?

When I started homeschooling, I was using scrap paper and sticky notes. After a few chaotic weeks, I realized I needed a weekly overview where I could map out what each kid was doing without re-writing everything each day. This planner is the solution I came up with.

What I love most is that it gives me a snapshot of the week at a glance. I don’t fill in every box, and I definitely don’t follow it perfectly, but having it laid out like this helps me feel like I’m not dropping the ball. It’s also easy to tweak as our plans change (which they always do).

Recommended Homeschool Planner Printables

Over the years, I’ve created several printable planner tools that I use and tweak based on our schedule. These are designed for moms who need structure but not rigidity.

What’s included in the printable?

Weekly Schedule Overview

This page gives you space to map out Monday through Friday. I usually write in subjects or priorities for each day to help guide our rhythm.

Weekly Subject Planner

This version lays out each subject across the week. It’s helpful when I want to see how often we’re hitting each topic or need to plan lessons in advance.

7-Day Weekly Plan with Notes

This layout includes Saturday and Sunday, which is perfect when we shift things around or have weekend projects. There’s also a notes section I use for random reminders, like calling the library or prepping a field trip.

How to Make Changes to the Template in Canva

If you want to customize the template, you can access the editable Canva version through the email you’ll receive after subscribing. Simply click the link, view the template, and select ‘Open in Editor’. It’s that easy to tweak the layout to fit your routine.

Once you’re in Canva, you might want to change the colors, add your kids’ names directly to the headings, or adjust the columns to match the subjects you’re currently focusing on. I’ve added space for flexibility, but sometimes it’s helpful to tailor it a bit more. Whether you want to add extra rows, swap out fonts, or adjust spacing. Canva gives you full control.
