How to plan a homeschool schedule?

Homeschool schedules don’t have to be rigid. Use these tips to keep your plans flexible but focused.

  • Block scheduling: Group subjects into time blocks instead of assigning specific hours.
  • Loop planning: Rotate through non-core subjects to ensure you don’t skip any.
  • Theme days: Focus on one big topic each day (science Mondays, art Fridays).
  • Daily anchors: Use consistent routines (like morning time or read-alouds) to start or end your day.
  • Break weeks: Plan regular breaks to avoid burnout.

A good homeschool planner works even better when you’ve got the right mindset and encouragement. I always keep a few solid books nearby to stay grounded and motivated.

This free homeschool planning template is great because it covers the whole school year in a printable monthly format, plus a simple weekly layout. You can use it to map out lessons, projects, appointments, co-op days, or anything else you need to track. I’ve found it especially useful for keeping bigger kids accountable.

  • Preschool to Grade 2: Circle field trip days, library visits, or science experiments.
  • Grades 3-5: Color-code subjects, plan themed weeks, or use stickers for motivation.
  • Middle School: Write out reading assignments or track goals for each subject.
  • High School: Log volunteer hours, test dates, or big deadlines for independent projects.

How this printable homeschool calendar can help

Using a monthly calendar makes it easier to track courses, appointments, and goals in one place. It brings structure without overcomplicating your day. Instead of feeling like everything was scattered in my head, I could see it all in one place. This gave me peace of mind and helped him stay on top of things.

Now with my daughter in 8th grade, we’re using it to map out her goals for each month. It’s great for keeping track of our pacing and making sure we don’t miss anything important. The layout makes it easy to jot down changes or shift things around when needed.

How to Make Changes to the Template Using Canva

After you subscribe, you’ll get an email with a link to the Canva version. Just click the link, view the file, and choose ‘Open in Editor.’ From there, you can update the months, change fonts, or add your own labels to personalize it.

I’ve found this super helpful when I need to adjust dates or move things around mid-year. No need to reprint everything. Just tweak what you need and print that page.

How to Use the Editable Homeschool Calendar

Once you’ve printed the calendar, I recommend slipping each page into a sheet protector and using a dry-erase marker for flexible planning. You can also post the current month on your fridge or in your homeschool area to keep everyone in the loop.

If you’re a binder user, simply punch the pages with a three-hole punch and keep them with your lesson plans. It’s handy to see everything together in one spot.
