After learning to write letters and then put words together, learning write sentences is a very important skill for kids. It can be easy to put sentences together while talking, but thinking about sentence structure and how to write a sentence properly can be a daunting task, nonetheless. In this post, we will share some funny and creatively great sentence starters to get kids curious.

Learn to Write Sentences the Easy (and Fun) Way

To help writing a sentence the easy way, it is best to make it fun. That is the first of several Language Arts tips I have for you. 😉 We love using these Story Starter Cubes because they are color-coded for the correct sentence elements and structure, but in a funny way. This really made a difference for my son and his understanding on writing sentences and how those sentences, making sense next to each other, make up some of the best stories!

Kids can learn write sentences with these cubes. They are made of durable foam, so they aren’t heavy or pose any danger if thrown. They come in 3 colors, blue for nouns, red for actions and yellow for places. Each sentence is created with all 3 cubes. With practice, children can then learn to write a complete sentence.

Fun & Easy Sentence Starters that Make Great Stories

When my son took three cubes (one of each color) and I took the other 3 in the set (again, one of each color), we would take turns rolling the dice. He chose to roll all three of his at the same time. I rolled mine one at a time. Once all 3 dice were rolled, we would arrange them in the blue, red and yellow.

Then we would read them out loud and make them complete sentences. For example, my son got “teacher,” call the police” and “at the zoo.” All he had to do was add “The” before teacher and a period at the end. I know that the dice could be placed in different order and still make complete sentences, but I wanted to keep it simple at first.

Help with Writing Sentences

I got “Man,” “receives a letter” and in the mountains. After reading it aloud, I made it a complete sentence. Not only are these great for writing sentences, but also they spark conversations (and lots of laughs). They also give us good ideas for stories that we want to write and practice good handwriting (manuscript or cursive). This set of dice are a great help with writing sentences. My sone loves it!

You can make your own at home Simply buy 6 large wooden dice, paint or stain them in three different colors and write different ideas on each. You can also get some “Retell the story” foam dice to learn while playing a fun game. It would be great for family game night. They are all great ways to get a conversation started and learn about correct sentence structure and punctuation.
