Interesting Facts About the Five Senses

The senses may seem simple, but there are fascinating details that most of us don’t often think about.

  • The tongue has different taste areas. While you may have heard that certain parts of the tongue are responsible for certain tastes, the truth is that the entire tongue can sense all flavors. Still, some regions may be slightly more sensitive to certain tastes.
  • The nose is closely tied to memory. Have you ever smelled something that immediately brought back a memory? That’s because the olfactory bulb is directly connected to the part of the brain that processes memory.
  • Your ears help with balance. Beyond hearing, the inner ear contains structures that send signals to your brain to keep you steady and coordinated.
