Surprising Facts About the Fall Season
Fall is full of cool changes, but there’s more going on behind the falling leaves and pumpkin patches than most people realize. These lesser-known facts make the season even more fascinating for kids when you’re doing science activities together.
- You can smell fall because of plant chemistry. That earthy, crisp scent in the air comes from decomposing leaves releasing specific organic compounds, like geosmin and tannins. It’s one reason walking through the woods in the fall always feels extra refreshing.
- Leaves don’t just change color. They reveal it. The red, orange, and yellow hues in leaves were always there, but they were hidden by chlorophyll during spring and summer. Once that green pigment breaks down in the fall, the other colors finally show up.
- Animals grow thicker coats even indoors. The shift in daylight triggers hormonal changes in mammals. Even house pets like rabbits or guinea pigs might shed more and grow in a denser coat during autumn.

Fall opens the door to some amazing hands-on science opportunities that just make sense with the season. We used to focus on nature-based topics this time of year because so many changes are happening outdoors, and the weather’s finally cool enough to enjoy longer nature walks.
Here are some of the science themes we liked focusing on during the fall:
- Plant life cycles: Watch how leaves change colors, fall off, and decompose. It’s a great time to observe how trees prepare for winter.
- Animal behavior: Track migration patterns of birds or study which animals begin hibernation. My daughter once mapped out squirrel activity for a whole week.
- Weather observation: Use thermometers or weather charts to log daily temperature changes. You can also measure sunlight hours as the days get shorter.
Earth science, biology, and environmental studies are easy wins in the fall since kids can see real examples of these concepts just by stepping outside. I remember my older two kids loving leaf chromatography experiments and tracking sunrise times to notice how the days were getting shorter.
