What is the science behind fall?
Fall, also known as autumn, happens because of the Earth’s tilt and its orbit around the sun. As our planet travels in its yearly journey, the Northern Hemisphere starts tilting away from the sun. This means we get less direct sunlight and the days become shorter and cooler.
The change in temperature signals trees to get ready for winter by dropping their leaves. The beautiful colors of fall leaves come from pigments inside them—when there’s less sunlight, trees stop making chlorophyll, which makes leaves green, revealing the reds, oranges, and yellows we all love so much.
So, fall’s cool weather and brilliant colors are all thanks to the way our Earth moves!
