Fun and Surprising Fruit & Veggie Facts

These facts always made my kids raise an eyebrow, and they’re a great way to keep the conversation going while they color.

  • White vegetables can be powerful too. Cauliflower and garlic, for example, can help fight off illness because of their natural plant compounds.
  • Purple carrots came before orange ones. Originally grown in Central Asia, carrots were purple, red, or yellow before the now-common orange variety.
  • Bananas are technically berries. According to botanical definitions, bananas fit the criteria for berries, while strawberries don’t.

My Favorite Health Books for Teaching Nutrition

If you’re looking for extra reading to go along with your lessons, there are a few health books I always go back to. They explain how the body works and why eating a variety of foods really matters.

Why Teaching Healthy Eating Habits Matters

Learning about food choices early on sets the tone for long-term habits. It’s not just about “eating your veggies.”

  • Encourages curiosity. Kids become more open to trying new foods when they understand their benefits.
  • Builds independence. When they know what foods fuel their bodies, they start making better snack choices on their own.
  • Connects science to real life. You can discuss topics like digestion, energy, or body parts while reinforcing other subjects.

Must-Try Healthy Body Printable Packs

When I want to dig deeper into wellness or keep things fun with games, I use some of my other printable health packs. They’re great for making tricky topics more accessible without overwhelming your kids.

What can kids learn from these rainbow food coloring worksheets?

Even a simple coloring activity can pack in some solid learning. Here’s what I noticed when we used these pages in our homeschool.

  • Food recognition. Kids get familiar with fruits and vegetables by color group, making them easier to remember during meals.
  • Color science connection. You can discuss why certain colors are important in nutrition and how they relate to pigments like beta-carotene or anthocyanins.
  • Fine motor development. Coloring within the lines helps strengthen hand control, especially important for early writers.

My Recommended Health and Hygiene Kits

For hands-on learners, I always suggest pairing worksheets with interactive tools. There are some great kits out there that help make hygiene and nutrition tangible.

Healthy Eating Coloring Pages Supplies

You won’t need anything fancy. Most of this can be pulled from your regular homeschool stash.

  • Printer (I have this one)
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Optional: a food chart or books for reference

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s included in the Eat a Rainbow printable pack?

Eat the Rainbow Coloring Page

This page is filled with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables shaped like a rainbow. We used this one to talk about all the colors on our plates and had a great time trying to identify each food.

Red Foods Help My Heart

This sheet includes red fruits and vegetables like strawberries, tomatoes, and peppers with a large heart in the center. It led to a great chat about heart health and what foods keep it strong.

Orange Foods Help Me See

Carrots, oranges, and pumpkins fill this page. It naturally led to a short discussion on eyesight and why vitamin A is so important.

Yellow Foods Give Me Energy

Bananas, corn, cheese, and pineapple are featured here with energy bolts as accents. My daughter used to giggle every time we talked about how bananas are nature’s energy bars.

Green Foods Make Me Strong

Broccoli, peas, lettuce, and cucumber are front and center here. We connected this page with our muscle unit to help visualize how greens support our body strength.

Blue and Purple Foods

This final page combines the calming colors with foods like blueberries, eggplant, and grapes. We chatted about how these foods help our brains and keep us feeling well.

More Health Activities for Kids

If you’re looking for other ways to make nutrition and wellness stick, I have more ideas and printables to keep your homeschool engaging.
