Interesting and Uncommon Facts About the 4th of July

There are so many quirky and lesser-known facts about Independence Day that my kids always find entertaining. It’s fun to talk about these while we color at the table.

  • The Declaration of Independence wasn’t fully signed on July 4th. While July 4th is the official date, most of the signatures happened on August 2nd. It took weeks for everyone to get the memo.
  • John Adams wanted July 2nd to be the big day. That was the date Congress voted for independence, and he even refused to celebrate on the 4th.
  • Fireworks date back centuries. The first Independence Day celebration in 1777 featured fireworks, a tradition borrowed from earlier European celebrations.

We like reading themed stories during or before the week of the Fourth. It gives the kids some background on the holiday without feeling like a lesson.
