Fun Whale Facts Kids Will Love

Whales are some of the most incredible creatures in the ocean, and learning about them can be just as exciting as seeing them on screen or in books. These facts really caught my kids’ attention and turned into great conversations at the table.

  • Whales have belly buttons. Yes, just like us. Whales are mammals, so they’re born alive and breathe air, meaning they have belly buttons.
  • Some whales sing complex songs. Humpback whales are known for their unique calls that can last for hours. Scientists believe they use these songs to communicate over long distances.
  • Whales have earwax plugs. Scientists can study the layers in a whale’s earwax to learn about its age and stress levels over time.

Reading together is one of the best ways to expand on these worksheets. I always like to keep a few ocean-themed books on hand to make the topic come alive.

Why should kids learn about Whales?

Whales are a gateway to learning about biology, habitats, and the importance of ocean ecosystems. Here’s why I believe they belong in any science lessons:

  • Whales teach us about mammals. Since they breathe air, give birth, and nurse their young, they’re a great way to introduce kids to mammal traits.
  • They live in fascinating habitats. Learning where whales live gets kids thinking about geography, weather, and how animals adapt.
  • Whales connect us to nature. Studying whales can build curiosity and a sense of responsibility for marine life.

If you want to explore ocean themes more deeply, I’ve got more printable packs that work well with this one. They’re great for mixing math, geography, and hands-on fun with ocean topics.

Whale Toys for Hands-On Play

Sometimes the best way to reinforce a topic is to let kids play with it. Whale-themed toys and figures can help bring learning to life in a more hands-on way.

Supplies Needed for the Whale Worksheets

To keep things manageable, here’s what I recommend having on hand when you get started:

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s Included in the Whale Activity Pages?

Parts of a Whale Diagram

This labeled diagram shows the basic parts of a whale’s body. It’s perfect for introducing new vocabulary while helping kids see how each part fits together.

Whale Parts Color and Trace

Kids will color the whale image and trace the names of each body part. This activity was a favorite at our table because it allowed us to talk about each part as we worked.

Whale Parts Labeling

Your child will write the names of whale body parts using a word bank. This one helped my son remember new terms because he got to recall and place them on his own.

Types of Whales

Learners trace the names of six different whale species. It’s a simple way to introduce kids to variety in marine life.

Matching Whales

Kids will match images of whales to their names. My daughter enjoyed this one—she liked saying each whale’s name out loud as she connected the pictures.

Fun Whale Activities for Kids to Try

After finishing the worksheets, there are so many ways to build on the learning. These extra ideas are great for stretching the topic into a complete unit.
