Unusual Whale Facts Your Kids Will Love
We always end up going down rabbit trails when we do themed units, and whales definitely inspired some fun conversations. These facts stood out while we were exploring:
- Blue whales have hearts the size of small cars: One heartbeat can be heard from over two miles away. It only beats about five times per minute when they dive deep.
- Some whales use bubble nets to catch their prey: Humpback whales create spiral “nets” of bubbles to trap schools of fish. Then they rise up from below to gulp them in one swoop.
- Narwhals have a tooth that grows like a unicorn’s horn: That tusk can grow up to 10 feet and is packed with nerves. Scientists think it may help them sense changes in the water.

You won’t need anything fancy for this activity. Just grab what you already have on hand:

- Pencil

- Access to the internet or books
I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

Kids choose one whale to study and fill in details about its diet, features, and fun facts. We used our books and a quick online search to help with this, and it sparked some good discussion.
