Fascinating Facts About Volcanoes

Volcanoes are more than just lava. When we were reading about them together, my son couldn’t believe some of these things were real. Here are a few facts your kids might enjoy:

  • Lightning can strike during a volcanic eruption. This happens when ash, rock, and gases collide in the air, creating static electricity. The result is a dramatic and unexpected lightning show in the middle of an eruption.
  • Not all lava flows the same. Some lava is slow and thick, while others are fast and runny, depending on the type of volcano and magma.
  • Volcanoes can create new land. Islands like Hawaii were formed from volcanic eruptions, layer by layer, over time.

Volcano Learning Pages Supplies

Here’s what I usually set out when we use this printable.

  • Printer (I have this one)
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Crayons
  • access to books or the internet for research

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s included in the volcano worksheet activities?

Parts of a Volcano Diagram

This page provides kids with a labeled picture of a volcano, allowing them to see each part in action. It’s great to review before moving on to other pages.

Label the Volcano

They’ll get to write in the names of each part using a word bank. This reinforces what they saw on the diagram and encourages memory skills.

Types of Volcano Research

Kids choose one of the three main volcano types and fill in a mini-report: what it looks like, how it erupts, the kind of lava it produces, and an example. They also get to draw their volcano, which my older son really enjoyed.

Volcano Vocabulary Match

This one is like a mini-game. Kids matching terms to their images is a great way to build vocabulary and keep them engaged.

Volcano Alert!

This page makes them think. Kids list safe and unsafe actions to take in the event of a volcanic eruption, helping them apply what they’ve learned.
