Why do kids need to learn about the universe?
Learning about the universe helps kids think beyond what they can see and opens up tons of curiosity about science and space.
- It builds science vocabulary: Words like orbit, satellite, galaxy, and astronaut become familiar and meaningful.
- It encourages big-picture thinking: Kids begin to understand that Earth is just one part of a much larger system.
- It inspires future interest in STEM: Space topics often lead to questions about planets, gravity, and even engineering.
- It connects to what they see: They can look up at the night sky and actually name what they’re seeing.
- It supports imagination: Thinking about space travel, aliens, or other planets gets their creativity going.

Supplies needed for the universe worksheets
You probably already have everything you need at home. Just a few basics will do.
- Printer (I have this one)
- Paper
- Pencil or Pen
- Crayons
I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.
Recommended Space Toys for Learning
Some of our favorite learning moments have come from games and puzzles. Space-themed toys like card games, simple models, or puzzles can help reinforce what they’ve learned in a hands-on way.

What’s included in the universe worksheets?
This printable includes 6 activity pages that introduce space vocabulary and creative thinking for early elementary students.
Universe Word Scramble
Kids unscramble six space-themed words, such as meteor and telescope. Each word is paired with a picture they can color, so it works as both a vocabulary and a fine motor activity.
Universe Vocabulary
They’ll look at images and pick the correct word from two choices. This one’s great for early readers, and we used it as a warm-up before reading a book on planets.
An Astronaut for a Day
This page asks students to draw themselves in space and write about what they’d do. My daughter did this one a few years ago and filled the page with planets, aliens, and a rocket she “designed” herself.
Designing My Own Planet
This activity walks them through naming and designing their own planet. They’ll also add facts about its orbit and number of moons.
Universe Word Search
They’ll hunt for 16 words related to space, like orbit, galaxy, and astronaut. My kids always treat word searches like a challenge, so I usually time them just for fun.
Answer Key Pages
There are answer key pages for both the word scramble and the word search, making it easy to check work.
How to extend the activity
If you want to build a bigger unit study around this printable, here are a few activities to keep kids learning and interested.
- Printable Planet Book: Use this to help kids research and write about real planets. It’s a good follow-up to the “Design Your Own Planet” page.
- Backyard Astronomy Guide: Head outside and try identifying stars and constellations with your child. It pairs nicely with the vocabulary work.
- Create a papier-mache planet: Let your child model the planet they designed using craft materials. This keeps the creative momentum going.
- Space trivia night: Write down the vocabulary words from the worksheets and quiz each other in teams. It’s fun and doesn’t feel like school.

If your child is already obsessed with planets or just starting to ask questions about stars, this worksheet set is a great place to begin. These printable universe activities for kids keep learning fun, and they fit perfectly into any early elementary science plan.
