Fascinating Facts About Sunflowers
Sunflowers are more than just pretty flowers. They’re packed with surprises that kids love learning about. Here are a few facts we enjoyed exploring during our sunflower unit:
- Sunflowers can move. Each morning, young sunflower heads face the east, and as the day goes on, they track the sun until it sets. This motion is called heliotropism.
- They can clean up the environment. Sunflowers have been planted to help remove toxins like lead and radiation from the soil in polluted areas.
- A sunflower isn’t just one flower. What appears to be a single bloom is actually composed of hundreds of tiny flowers, all tightly packed together in the center, known as florets.
Recommended Sunflower Books
These activity sheets pair well with a cozy stack of sunflower-themed picture books. I always keep a few on hand to read aloud before we start the activity, and it’s a great way to set the scene.

What You’ll Need to Get Started
You probably already have everything on hand, which is my favorite kind of prep. Here’s what I suggest:
- Printer (I have this one)
- Paper
- Pencil
- Crayons
I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.
