Sun Worksheets for Kindergarten

Young Learners Science Club

While we were working through our weather unit, I created these Sun Worksheets for Kindergarten to support our solar system lessons. My daughter loved anything space-related when she was younger, so sun-themed activities were a huge hit. This printable set focuses on early learning skills while giving kids a fun intro to the sun.

If you’re putting together a themed week, make sure to check out my Space Printables for Kids. You’ll find lots of fun worksheets and hands-on activities that make planning lessons on planets, stars, and the moon much easier.

You’ll see everything that’s included in this free sun printable, how to use it, what skills it covers, and how you can build on it with more activities. If you’re doing a space theme in your homeschool, this is a great addition to your activities.

Why Kids Need to Learn About the Sun

Understanding the sun helps kids make sense of the world around them. It’s a natural way to introduce science and observation skills at an early age.

  • The sun gives us light and heat: This is a great way to talk about energy, temperature, and weather.
  • It affects plants and animals: Kids start to notice patterns in how sunlight helps things grow and how animals behave.
  • It helps us learn about space: The sun is the closest star to Earth, and it’s an easy way to begin discussing other planets and the solar system.

Adding a few picture books about the sun can help bring the concept to life. I always keep a small basket of themed books nearby to go along with our printables, especially when my kids were in kindergarten.

Supplies Needed for the Sun Printable

You only need a few basic supplies to get started.

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

Recommended Space Toys

Adding a few simple toys related to the sun or solar system helps reinforce what you’re teaching. My daughter always enjoyed pretend play, so we used sun puzzles, planet figurines, and toy telescopes during our space units.

The cut and paste activity included in the Sun Worksheets for Kindergarten

What’s included in the printable sun pages?

This printable includes 5 pages of sun-themed activities for kindergarteners. Here’s what you’ll find inside:

Sun Tracing

This page gives kids a chance to trace a cute sun outline with a smiling face. It’s great for fine motor development and pre-writing skills.

All About the Sun

Kids read a short paragraph about what the sun does, then answer three simple questions by coloring the correct answers. It mixes early reading with science and is easy to understand.

Things I Need on a Sunny Day

Children cut and sort items into two boxes: what they need on a sunny day and what they don’t. This one is a favorite because of the cut-and-paste component.

Find the Word: SUN

This page is a simple letter recognition activity. Kids search for the letters S, U, and N in a scattered group of circles and color them in.

Draw the Weather

Children draw a sunny day in the space above the sentence “Today is sunny.” The sentence is traceable, which adds a bit of handwriting practice to the fun.

How to Extend the Activity

If you’re looking to go a bit further, these sun worksheets can easily be paired with a few more themed activities.

  • Space Coloring Pages: Print some coloring pages to add a relaxing, creative option for quiet time. I used these often during independent work blocks.
  • Paper Plate Spaceship Craft: This simple craft is fun and doesn’t require any fancy supplies. My daughter used to decorate her spaceship with stickers and glitter glue.
  • Create a sun collage with tissue paper: Use orange, yellow, and red scraps to glue down a textured sun. It’s messy in a good way and gives kids another chance to talk about what the sun looks like.
  • Do a shadow-tracing activity: go outside and trace shadows at different times of day. This is an easy way to connect sunlight to movement and time.
