Interesting Space Facts
Space is full of mysteries, and even though scientists have studied it for years, there’s always more to discover. Here are a few fascinating facts about space that your child might not know:
- The sun’s atmosphere is hotter than its surface. The corona, or outermost layer, can reach temperatures up to 2 million degrees Fahrenheit, while the surface is around 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Space isn’t completely silent. While it’s true that space is a vacuum, sound waves can travel through plasma and electromagnetic fields, meaning some sounds exist in space.
- The sun makes up over 99% of the mass in our solar system. That means all the planets, moons, asteroids, and everything else in our solar system make up less than 1% of the total mass.
