Fascinating Facts About the Solar System
There’s always something new to learn about space, even for adults. Here are a few interesting facts I learned alongside my kids:
- Venus spins in the opposite direction of most planets.
- Neptune has supersonic winds that reach over 1,200 miles per hour.
- There’s a mountain on Mars nearly three times Mount Everest’s height.
My Favorite Space Books
There are so many beautiful and educational books about space. I always keep a few on hand to read alongside these worksheets. Books let kids open their imagination to what is possible outside our world.

Why teach children about the solar system?
Kids are naturally curious about the world around them, and space opens up a new way of thinking about science and our place in the universe. Teaching them about the solar system helps build a foundation in earth and space sciences while sparking big questions that keep them engaged and thinking.
When we explored the solar system at home, my kids constantly brought up fun facts or asked questions like, “What if we could live on Jupiter?” These conversations helped us build connections between reading, writing, and science without it feeling like formal lessons.

- Problem-Solving: Word scrambles and searches encourage attention to detail and logical thinking.

Here’s what you’ll want to have ready before getting started:
- Printer (I have this one)
- Paper
- Pencil
- Crayons
I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.
What’s included in the solar system pages?
Solar System Word Scramble
This page has your kids unscrambling jumbled letters to reveal planet and space-related words. It’s a great way to combine vocabulary review with some spelling practice.
Planets in the Solar System
Each sentence gives a clue about a planet—kids read the fact and write in the correct answer. It’s perfect for reviewing basic facts and encouraging reading for meaning.
Solar System Word Search
The grid contains 12 space-related words. My kids love circling words, and it’s a low-pressure way to develop letter recognition and spelling.
All About the Solar System
Your child completes fill-in-the-blank sentences using a word bank with the correct terms. This activity helped my son remember the order of the planets and a few facts that stuck with him for days.
My Planet
Here’s where creativity takes over. Kids can dream up their planet, name it, and draw what it looks like. One of my kids created a lava planet covered in ice cream—so you never know what they’ll come up with.
Answer Keys
The answer keys are included on the last three pages. This makes it easy to check work without looking things up yourself.
