Which sports are best for kindergarteners?

Kindergarten kids benefit from simple, skill-based activities that focus on movement, coordination, and teamwork. At this age, it is more about fun and basic motor skills than competition.

  • Soccer: Great for coordination and balance while learning to follow directions.
  • T-ball or beginner baseball: Teaches hand-eye coordination in a relaxed setting.
  • Gymnastics: Builds flexibility and body awareness through structured movement.
  • Swimming: Encourages water safety and strengthens major muscle groups.
  • Basketball basics: Dribbling and passing help with control and focus.

When my older boys were younger, we tried a mix of these so they could see what they enjoyed most. It was helpful to keep expectations low and focus on skill-building rather than winning.

My Favorite Sports Books

I always kept a small stack of sports-themed picture books on hand to pair with handwriting practice because stories help connect new vocabulary to real-life situations.

Skills kids will learn with these sports-themed pages

These kindergarten handwriting sheets focus on letter formation, number words, vocabulary, and sentence structure, using a sports theme to keep children engaged.

  1. Practice uppercase and lowercase letter tracing before moving to independent writing.
  2. Read simple words related to games and match them with pictures.
  3. Count objects and write number words to connect math with language arts.

When my daughter was in kindergarten, she needed repetition with tracing before she felt confident writing on her own. Pages like these gave her that steady practice without overwhelming her.

Having a few basic items like soft balls, cones, or a child-sized bat makes it easy to connect handwriting themes with real movement breaks.

Supplies needed for the sports handwriting activity

You do not need much to get started, which makes this an easy addition to your printables.

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s included in the sports handwriting pages?

Letter S tracing page

On page 1, children trace the uppercase and lowercase S before copying the sentence “I love doing sports.” This page builds early handwriting confidence by combining letter practice with a simple sentence.

Sports vocabulary tracing and coloring

This page includes pictures labeled golf, tennis, baseball, volleyball, basketball, and football. Kids trace each word and color the matching image, connecting vocabulary with visual recognition.

Count and write number words

The third page asks children to count different balls and write number words such as five, one, three, four, and two. This blends early math skills with handwriting in a clear, structured layout.

My favorite sports writing prompt

On page 4, students complete the sentence about their favorite activity and draw a related picture. I always appreciated open-ended prompts like this because they encouraged creativity while practicing sentence structure.

Copy the descriptive phrases

Page 5 includes phrases such as ‘big red ball,’ ‘fast runner,’ ‘loud cheer,’ ‘high jump,’ and ‘gold trophy.’ Children copy each phrase onto the provided lines, strengthening spacing and word awareness.

Ways to extend the activity

If you want to build a full themed week around this printable, there are several simple ideas that work well.

  • Read more sports-themed stories together: Pairing read-aloud time with handwriting reinforces vocabulary naturally.
  • Practice writing with fun sentence starters: This helps children move from tracing to writing their own thoughts.
  • Set up a backyard obstacle course. After your child finishes a worksheet, let them complete a short movement challenge tied to a sport mentioned on the page.
  • Create a mini sports journal. Have your child draw and write one sentence about a physical activity they tried that week.
