Penguin Activity Sheets
If your kids are anything like mine were in the early grades, animals always won their attention, especially the ones that live in icy places. These Penguin Activity Sheets are a great way to bring some winter learning into their lessons without overburdening them. They cover just enough science, reading, and creative writing to keep things moving without overwhelming anyone.
If you’re collecting resources, be sure to check out my full list of penguin activities for kids. I’ve done penguin crafts, life cycles, and even some STEM activities that my teenager still remembers. It’s fun to revisit these every year, especially when January feels long.
Here’s what you’ll find in the printable, what your kids will learn from it, and a few extra ways to use it. It’s an easy way to keep lessons going without a fight.

Why do kids need to learn about penguins?
Penguins are fascinating creatures, and studying them helps kids understand science concepts in a fun, memorable way. It’s also a great entry point into habitats, animal classification, and geography.
- Penguins can’t fly: This surprises kids and prompts them to think about how animals adapt to different environments.
- They live in both cold and warm climates: Not all penguins live in Antarctica, and that’s a great map activity waiting to happen.
- They are strong swimmers: This leads to discussions about animal movement, survival, and food chains.
- Each species is unique: There are 18 different penguin species, and learning their names and features builds vocabulary and observation skills.
Recommended Penguin Books
Reading about penguins helps reinforce the facts kids learn during hands-on activities. I like to keep a few nonfiction and storybooks nearby when we do penguin-themed units.

Suggested topics related to the lesson
If you want to stretch this unit a bit, penguins connect to several other science and geography topics that work well for grades 1 to 3.
- Animal adaptations: Talk about how penguins stay warm or how they camouflage.
- Polar regions vs. temperate zones: Use a globe or map to compare penguin habitats.
- Food chains: Explore how penguins fit into marine ecosystems.
- Bird characteristics: Even though they don’t fly, penguins are still birds. What does that mean?

Skills kids will learn with this printable
These worksheets help kids practice multiple skills while staying on theme. Here’s how I’ve seen them work:
- Word puzzles build vocabulary and spelling.
- Math pages let them practice basic facts in a low-pressure format.
- Creative writing prompts develop language and storytelling skills.
Recommended Penguin Toys
Tactile toys and figurines help reinforce what kids learn through play. They’re also useful for sensory bins or storytelling.

Supplies needed for the penguin activities
Everything in the printable is black and white, so you won’t need anything fancy to get started. Here’s what I’d have on hand:
- Printer (I have this one)
- Paper
- Pencil
- Crayons
I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.
What’s included in the penguin worksheets?
Penguin Word Scramble
Kids unscramble six words related to penguins, like snow, swim, and egg. Each word is paired with a picture to color, which is great for early finishers.
Who Is That Penguin?
This page challenges kids to match five penguin species to their illustrations. It encourages close observation and introduces kids to species such as the King and Rockhopper penguins.
Crack the Code – Penguin Facts
This worksheet is a fun mix of decoding and science. Kids use a number-to-letter key to learn penguin facts, such as what they eat and how many species there are.
Penguin: Color by Addition
Great for practicing math facts while sneaking in some art time. Once the equations are solved, kids color the image according to the code provided.
If I Had a Pet Penguin…
A creative writing and drawing prompt where kids describe and illustrate their imaginary pet penguin. This one always led to some of my favorite stories when my kids were that age.
Ways to extend the activity
When your kids finish the worksheets, you can build on the learning in easy, hands-on ways that don’t require much prep.
- Penguin STEM activities: Use building toys or recycled materials to make a penguin habitat.
- Penguin life cycle: Print out life cycle cards and create a mini timeline.
- Sensory bin with ice and penguin toys: Add scoops, tongs, and water beads.
- Map it out: Have your kids mark penguin habitats on a world map.

Whether you use these worksheets as a morning warm-up or as part of a full penguin unit, they make a great resource for busy homeschool moms. These penguin printables are low-prep, fun, and they bring in learning across subjects without the stress.
