Ocean Facts for Kids
Homeschooling parents often look for ways to make learning about the world around us fun and exciting for our kids. One great way to do this is to focus on ocean-related topics. Not only are there a multitude of interesting ocean animals to learn about, but there are also a variety of engaging ocean learning activities that kids can enjoy.
Did you know that more than two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by ocean? And that the average depth of the ocean is about 2.5 miles? The ocean is a fascinating place, and there’s a lot to learn about it! Here are some fun facts about the ocean for kids:
The ocean is home to a variety of creatures, from tiny plankton to huge whales. In fact, almost 90% of all life on Earth lives in the ocean!
The largest ocean on Earth is the Pacific Ocean. It covers about 30% of the Earth’s surface and is almost twice as large as the Atlantic Ocean.
The deepest part of the ocean is called the Mariana Trench. It’s located in the western Pacific Ocean and reaches a depth of over 36,000 feet!
The water in the ocean isn’t just one big blue blob – it actually comes in different shades of blue, green, and even purple. This is caused by the way sunlight reflects off of different particles in the water.
Learning about the ocean can be fun for kids of all ages. There are many homeschool resources available to help teach kids about ocean animals, habitats, and more. And there are also plenty of fun ocean learning activities for kids that can be done right at home or at the beach!
