Moon Worksheets for Kindergarten

Young Learners Science Club

Moon Worksheets for Kindergarten has always been one of my favorite themes to teach during our early homeschool years. Anything space-related caught my kids’ attention, especially when learning was hands-on rather than busywork.

When my older kids were younger, we often rotated through themed units, and space was always a hit. For a bigger unit, you might also want to check out my list of space printables for kids

What moon topics can you talk about with kindergarten kids?

The moon is one of those science topics that feels approachable for young learners. You can keep conversations simple while still building a strong foundation.

  • Moon phases: Kids can notice how the moon changes shape over time by looking at pictures and simple diagrams.
  • Day and night: This helps children understand why we see the moon mostly after sunset.
  • Patterns in space: Repeating shapes and cycles connect well with early math skills.
  • Vocabulary words: Terms like full, half, and crescent are easy to introduce through visuals.

Books about the moon to pair with this activity

I like to read simple nonfiction and gentle stories about the moon alongside these worksheets, as they help kids connect the pictures on the page to what they see in the sky.loo9kiik9

Supplies needed for the Moon Worksheets

You likely already have most of these items at home, which makes setup quick.

  • Printer (I have this one)
  • Paper
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue
  • Crayons or colored pencils

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s no longer available. It’s been running well for years now. Consider another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s included in the moon activity pages?

Phases of the Moon

This page introduces the four main moon phases using clear visuals. My daughter worked through this during her kindergarten year, and it helped the concept finally click.

Cut and Paste Moon Phases

Kids cut out labels and match them to the correct moon picture. This was always a favorite in our house because it felt more like a game than schoolwork.

Moon Tracing Page

Children trace curved lines to form the moon shape, then color it. This page worked well for short, focused practice sessions.

Find the Word Moon

Kids search for letters that spell the word moon and color them in. It’s a gentle way to work on letter recognition and early reading skills.

Moon Patterns

This activity focuses on recognizing and completing visual patterns. My older boys enjoyed this one when they were younger because it felt like solving a puzzle.

Nighttime Writing Page

Kids draw a picture and complete a simple sentence about nighttime. This page encouraged creativity and early sentence formation.

Ways to extend the moon activities

Once kids finish the worksheets, I like to keep the theme going with simple add-ons.

  • Moon phases coloring pages: These work well for quiet time or morning work.
  • Oreo moon phases activity: We tried this when my teens were much younger, and it was always memorable.
  • Night sky observations: Step outside in the evening and talk about what the moon looks like.
  • Moon crafts: Paper plates and paint make an easy art project tied to science.
