The best part about this tracker worksheet is that there are so many places to fill in the moon. I also love that you can make this last as long or as short as you want, depending on the length of time that you can spend.

If you have a child that is interested in learning all about the phases of the moon, this is an awesome moon printable to have! Not only will be able to observe but they’ll also be able to draw out what they see, too.

I’m serious when I say that I could stare up at the stars and the moon for hours…It’s one of my favorite things to do. The kids have thankfully found that love as well and it’s something that we love to bond over and talk about.

What is another name for the moon phase?

Most people refer to this as the moon phase but you might hear people calling it a lunar phase as well. Either works and they mean the same thing. It’s always good to talk to the kids about both terminologies so that they’re aware.

How many moon phases are there?

If you’re going to be studying about the phases of the moon, this is an important question to know! There are 8 phases of the main, and they are:

  • new Moon
  • waxing crescent
  • first quarter
  • waxing gibbous
  • full moon
  • waning gibbous
  • third quarter
  • waning crescent

As you can tell, each phase of the moon is going to look different and represent that the moon is located in a different part of the sky or Earth.

How often do the moon phases repeat?

The cycle repeats itself once per month. This is pretty cool to think about and is a fun way to track the cycles of the moon.

How many days does it take for the moon to orbit around the Earth?

What a great trivia question for the kids! For the moon to fully make its way around the Earth, it will take 27 days total. This is what causes the various phases of the moon.

Fun Ways to use this Moon Tracker Worksheet

While you can easily do many things with this worksheet, there are a few fun things that you and the kids can do.

Use this daily to track the changes of the moon

Have the kids go out every night and peek at the moon. Then have them color in the moon shapes and keep track. Are they able to see the moon every single day or do clouds cover them some nights?

Let them guess what the next phase of the moon is going to be

Maybe the moon will look totally different one night from the next, who knows?! Have them guess what they think the next phases will look like and then have them draw it, too.

Create fun stories to go along with their moon phases

There’s nothing like a good ol’ imagination to make learning fun! Have the kids talk about the man on the moon and see if they can create an adorable story about him.

Add in great books about the moon

Don’t forget to find some great books about the moon! Since we love reading books, we’re always pairing up books with the subject that we’re studying and learning about. There are always great options online or you can check out some from the library as well.

I tend to get a wide range of books so that the kids can read some on their own and others I read to them while they’re crafting and creating. This makes a good balance for them to be interactive while also listening at the same time.
