What are the common leaf shapes?

When it comes to leaves, you’ll find many different shapes out there, each with its own personality! Here are five common leaf shapes that you might encounter:

Oval

These leaves are rounded at both ends and give off that classic leaf vibe. Think of the leaves on an olive tree or a magnolia.

Lanceolate

Shaped like a spear, lanceolate leaves are longer than they are wide. You’ll see these on plants like the willow or some varieties of sage.

Heart-shaped

These are super cute and, as the name suggests, shaped like hearts! They can often be found on plants like the redbud tree or the common ivy.

Palmatum (Palmately lobed)

Picture fingers extending from a central point—that’s palmate for you! Maple leaves are a great example of this shape.

Linear

These leaves are long and narrow, resembling grass blades. You’ll see linear leaves on plants like bamboo and some types of lilies.

Now that you know some common leaf shapes, you can spot them easily while coloring or exploring outdoors!
