Layers of the Earth Facts

The Earth is made up of four main layers: the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core. Each one has its own unique properties that make it distinct from the others. Let’s take a closer look at each one.

The Crust

The crust is the outermost layer of the Earth. It’s also the thinnest, ranging from just a few kilometers thick to up to 70 kilometers thick. The crust is made up of solid rocks and minerals, and it’s where we find all of our continents and oceans.

The Mantle

The mantle is the layer under the crust. It’s much thicker than the crust, measuring 2,900 kilometers thick. The mantle is made up of hot rocks that are constantly moving around. This movement helps to drive plate tectonics, which shapes our planet’s surface over time.

The Outer Core

The outer core is the layer under the mantle. It’s even hotter than the mantle, and it’s also liquid instead of solid. The outer core is made up of iron and nickel that are in a constant state of motion. This motion creates Earth’s magnetic field.

The Inner Core

The inner core is the hottest layer of them all. It’s also under immense pressure, due to all of the weight of the other layers above it. The inner core is solid because of this pressure, and it’s made up of iron and nickel like the outer core. However, unlike the outer core, the iron in the inner core is in a crystal-like structure.
