What is Groundhog Day?
Groundhog Day is a fun and unique tradition we celebrate every year on the 2nd of February. It revolves around a cute and furry little animal called the groundhog.
According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its burrow and sees its shadow because the weather is sunny, it will return to its home, which predicts six more weeks of winter.
But, if it’s still cloudy, and the groundhog doesn’t see its shadow, it means spring is just around the corner!
Though it might seem a little quirky, this tradition has been around for a long time. It originated from an old European weather lore related to different animals, like bears or badgers.
When early German settlers arrived in the United States, they chose these cute and lovable groundhogs as their weather predictor! The most famous groundhog is Punxsutawney Phil, who lives in Pennsylvania. Every year, a big celebration is held in the town of Punxsutawney in honor of him on Groundhog Day.
