Uncommon Facts About Father’s Day

Did you know there’s more to Father’s Day than cards and neckties? Here are a few unexpected facts that caught my attention:

  • The idea for Father’s Day was inspired by a single dad who raised six children in Washington State.
  • The day wasn’t made an official U.S. holiday until 1972.
  • In Germany, Father’s Day is celebrated with hiking trips and picnics involving wagons of food and drinks.

Reading stories about dads can help kids better understand and appreciate this special day. Grab one of these great books for your children and their dad to read together.

Fun Father’s Day Activities

We love mixing things up with crafts, especially for holidays. This year, we made some adorable Father’s Day crafts and these printable bookmarks, which double as a coloring activity and a heartfelt gift.

If you’re doing this with younger kids, having some pre-sharpened colored pencils ready helps. Also, a small stack of blank paper is a good backup if they finish quickly or want to make extra designs.

Aside from crafting, you can try other simple and meaningful ways to celebrate the day. Here are two activities that worked well for us:

  • Father’s Day Interview: Have your kids answer questions about their dad, like his favorite food or what makes him fun. Their answers can be hilarious and sweet keepsakes.
  • Story Time Session: Let your kids pick their favorite story about dads and read it together. It becomes a quiet bonding moment and encourages conversation.

How do you make a DIY bookmark for Father’s Day?

If you’re wondering how to make the most of this printable pack, here are a few tips to help your kids create a great DIY bookmark.

Start by printing on thicker paper, like cardstock, for durability. Encourage your child to pick a design that reminds them of their dad. Let them take their time coloring, adding unique touches like doodles or a short message on the back.

Laminating the finished bookmark is optional, but a great way to make it last longer.

Skills Kids Can Learn from this Easy Father’s Day Bookmark Craft

While they work on their bookmarks, they’re also gaining a few valuable skills:

  • Cutting and coloring: This supports hand coordination and strengthens motor control, especially for early-graders.
  • Thoughtful expression through art: The templates encourage kids to communicate what they admire about their dad.
  • Following multi-step directions: From printing to trimming and decorating, it’s a simple but effective way to practice sequencing and patience.

Keep things simple with these easy-to-find items:

  • Printer (I have this one)
  • Paper / Cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Crayons, colored pencils, or markers
  • Ribbon or yarn (optional for a fancy touch)
  • Laminator (optional, but handy for durability)

I have the HP printer 8710, but it’s not available anymore. It’s been running well for years now. Look for another HP Instant Ink-ready printer so that you can use their program to send you ink cartridges whenever your printer gets low on ink.

What’s Included in the Father’s Day Printable?

Happy Father’s Day Bookmark

This one features a cheerful cartoon dad surrounded by hearts and a fill-in-the-blank section where kids can write their names. My son loved adding his name and giving Dad some extra heart decorations.

My Dad, My Hero

This superhero-themed design was a hit. The bold picture gives kids a lot of space to color, and it opened up a conversation with my daughter about what makes her dad a hero to her.

All About Dad (Mustache Version)

A fun mustache illustration accompanies a list of words describing a great father. It’s great for vocabulary and reading practice, and my son giggled the entire time coloring the mustache purple.

Five More Unique Designs

This set includes five more styles, each combining fun illustrations and short phrases. Each one has just the right balance of text and image for first—to third-graders to enjoy independently.

Let your kids take the lead, and just enjoy the time spent creating together.
